I recently had a coaching session that turned into a bit of an unexpected chuckle-fest. Picture this: I’m deep in conversation with a client, and out of the corner of my eye, I spot an “inspirational” quote proudly displayed on her wall. It read: “It doesn’t get easier, you just get better.”
I just started laughing, and shaking my head: “You’ve GOT to take that down!”
Why? Because while that might sound motivational on the surface, it encapsulates a belief many of us have unknowingly adopted: that success means more work and always requires struggle. It suggests that the only way to navigate life’s challenges is to toughen up, put in more hours, and brace for handling all the hardships.
But what if we flipped the script? Instead of constantly accepting a hard life, why not make life…well, easier?
I shared with her one of my favorite Warren Buffet wisdom nuggets:
"The difference between successful people, and really successful people is that successful people say no to almost everything."
Think about that for a second. It’s not about taking on more; it’s about focusing on what truly matters.
By saying ‘no’ more often, by prioritizing, and by shedding the weight of unnecessary burdens, we can cultivate a life that’s not only successful but also joyful, balanced, and yes, easier.
I’d love to hear from you! Have you ever come across an “inspirational” quote or belief that you later realized might be holding you back?

Hey there, I’m Shayla King! 🌟I began by flipping pancakes at IHOP and then hustled my way up to the corporate C-Suite before 40. My journey’s had it all. At first, it was grueling. On top of the challenges of being a young woman trying to climb the ladder in male dominated industries, I was also a single mom battling autoimmune diseases.
The silver lining? I spearheaded leadership development at some of America’s largest companies. I used those skills to distill those trials and triumphs into a proven framework. Now, I’m here to help ambitious moms like you design a life of ease and joy. If this IHOP gal can rise, redesign, and thrive, so can you.
